Question by usaforklift: Do you like a poem one time and dislike it the next time, depending on the mood you’re in?
faust
i read faust today i’m set upon it
he curled around my mind like gin and tonic
the voice so true and bold a clarion’s call
i read til i was drunk and can’t recall
but faust he drew me in by force of style
paperback novels stretch out by the mile
archives grow and grow by leaps and bounds
and faust he laughs and makes his daily rounds
faust he lumbered through the moldy tomes
he rued the printed world that now he roams
he chafed heroically and bitterly
against life’s one-dimensionality
he spoke a was so intertwined in verse
i felt he boldly acted i rehearse
faust a classy act drew spirits near
i in genius lacked indulge in beer
and he now bound in leather’s verdant fold
a classic sprung forth from the ages old
sits open here before the likes of me
and whispers in my ear i speak to thee
the Reference for my poem:
Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
translated by George Madison Priest
FAUST’S STUDY
Night. In a high-vaulted, narrow Gothic chamber FAUST, restless in his chair by his desk.
Faust. I’ve studied now Philosophy
And Jurisprudence, Medicine,
And even, alas! Theology
All through and through with ardour keen!
Here now I stand, poor fool, and see
I’m just as wise as formerly.

Yes, I would say that’s a fair question. It does, apparently,
depend on my mood!
