What are the BEST Read Aloud books for kids?

Question by Scott S: What are the BEST Read Aloud books for kids?
I am a 6th grade teacher, and just finished reading Midnight Magic by Avi to my class…….to say they LOVED it is an understatement. (One day they chose to stay in and hear the book rather than go to recess)….I am looking for some other GREAT read aloud choices that my kids can really sink their teeth into. Any genre will do, but knowing sixth graders as I do, humor, mystery, and suspense are their favorite kinds of books. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

a great interactive website is storylineonline.net It is great if you have a computer lab the kids can use. A video plays for each book that is being read by an actor or actress. My students love it it is great for all ages,

I read Coraline to my class last year. It’s more of a 5th or 6th grade level book, but my third graders loved it. It’d be a fun one to do this month for Halloween because it has a nice creep factor to it. Bonus points if you read it ALL with a British accent.

I’ve started reading The Westing Game on my own, but I’ve read some really killer reviews of it. It’s a murder mystery that follows in the same vein as Clue.

Here’s a few of my favorites for kids that age: Bridge to Terabithia, Wrinkle in Time, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Secret Garden, The Hobbit, Lois Lowry’s Number the Stars and The Giver.

Check out the ALA website for book lists and also the International Reading Association’s website. The latest issue of The Reading Teacher has issued a collection of books used for read alouds for all grades.
